The Vice Chancellors of several prominent State Private Universities in Meghalaya gathered at Courtyard Marriott, Shillong, on 4th September 2024, to discuss the proposal for a new association, the “Confederation of Meghalaya Private Universities.” This significant meeting included key representatives: Dr. Alicia Gatphoh (ICFAI University), Dr. Paul Bhaggien (North East Adventist University), Dr. Soma Bhowmick (William Carey University), Prof. T.K. Kharbamon (Martin Luther Christian University), Dr. Manjeet Kaur Kuashal (CMJ University), Dr. Sagar O. Manjee (Mahatma Gandhi University), and Dr. Malhar Pangrikar (MIT University of Meghalaya).

The proposed confederation aims to collectively enhance and reshape Meghalaya’s educational landscape. By fostering collaboration among private universities, it seeks to develop a unified approach to improving academic standards, infrastructure, and the overall learning environment in the state. This initiative aims to position Meghalaya as a thriving education hub, attracting students and educators from across the country and beyond.

The Vice Chancellors emphasized their commitment to driving innovation in higher education, promoting research opportunities, and ensuring quality academic programs. The Confederation of Meghalaya Private Universities will address challenges, advocate for policy reforms, and build partnerships to benefit the broader academic ecosystem of the state. This collaborative effort marks a significant step toward strengthening Meghalaya’s reputation as a center for educational excellence.

The association will seek recognition from the State Education Ministry and the Meghalaya Private Universities Regulatory Board (MPURB). Its members will include State Private Universities and Deemed Universities (Private) listed under UGC and enacted by the State Government of Meghalaya. The confederation will have office bearers in positions of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer, selected for specific tenures.

At the end of the meeting, interim representatives were appointed to key positions in the association’s governing body. Dr. Malhar Pangrikar (MIT University of Meghalaya) was appointed as the acting President; Prof. T.K. Kharbamon (Martin Luther Christian University) was appointed as the acting Vice-President; and Dr. Paul Bhaggien (North East Adventist University) was selected as the acting Secretary.
