Slow but satisfactory, says Speaker on ongoing Assembly Building construction

HEADLINES

The Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Thomas A Sangma on Thursday conducted an inspection of the ongoing construction of the new Legislative Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang, New Shillong.

After reviewing various sections of the site alongside the construction team, Sangma expressed satisfaction with the progress but emphasized the importance of completing the work promptly. He stated that the primary focus of his inspection was to ensure that the surroundings of the Assembly hall are enhanced with trees and flowers. To achieve this, he directed the Forest, Horticulture, and Urban Affairs Departments to take charge of the landscaping efforts.

Additionally, plans are underway to feature a display of the history of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly over the past 50 years within the new building.

Addressing challenges faced during the construction, Sangma acknowledged the shortage of workers but mentioned that skilled laborers, specifically trained for the roof work that had collapsed last year, will be arriving from outside the state to complete the job.

Originally, the building was set for completion by September 2024, but the timeline has been extended. The government now aims to finish the construction by next year, in time for a full Assembly session to be held in the new premises.
