The Meghalaya government has approved the Meghalaya Health Academic Rules 2024 to ensure the timely establishment of medical colleges in the state. Speaking after a cabinet meeting, Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh announced that Shillong Medical College will start its MBBS program in 2025-26, admitting 100 students in the first batch with an annual allocation of ₹60 crore.
The government plans to utilize the Shillong Civil Hospital and Ganesh Das Hospital as teaching facilities for the medical college. Existing doctors from government hospitals will serve as faculty alongside other hires.
Efforts are also underway for the Tura Medical College, though it may take additional time to begin operations. Additionally, the government has approved the Meghalaya Dental Health Service Rule 2024 to streamline appointments, promotions, and dental healthcare services in the state.
