Shillong bid an emotional farewell to Goddess Durga today with the traditional Sindoor Khela, where married women smeared vermilion on each other before the idols were taken for immersion. Despite torrential rains, devotees thronged the pandals to offer their last prayers and celebrate the final moments of Durga Puja.
More than 70 idols are set to be immersed in the Polo River, as the city resonates with chants of “Asche bochor abar hobe” (She will return next year). The vibrant yet emotional send-off reflects the spirit of faith, devotion, and cultural unity.
In Khasi-Jaintia and Ri-Bhoi, there are 102 idols, while in Garo Hills there are 140, making a total of 242.
