The Hima Khyrim concluded its annual Lehniam and Shad Nongkrem festival at Smit on Tuesday brought together hundreds of men, women, and children clad in traditional attires to celebrate and renew their bonds with the earth, the harvest, and the divine.
This year’s Shad Nongkrem marked a special occasion, commemorating the enactment of the Hima Khyrim Act, 2024. The bill, recently signed by the Governor of Meghalaya, CH Vijayashankar, was publicly launched at the Ïngsad of Hima Khyrim. Following the announcement, the Governor ceremonially handed the bill to Pa’iem Dr. Balajied Sing Syiem, marking a historic moment.
The Hima Khyrim Act, 2024, was signed into Act after the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) passed it on March 12, 2024. It was officially published in the Meghalaya Gazette on November 11.
The celebration was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji, Minister of Arts and Culture, Paul Lyngdoh, KHADC Chief Executive Member, Pyniaid Sing Syiem, Deputy CEM P N. Syiem, along with various MLAs, MDCs, the Bakhraws, the Lyngdohs and other distinguished guests.
