Re-Poll Declared in Four Polling Stations in East Jaintia Hills Following EVM Vandalism

HEADLINES

The Meghalaya government has announced a re-poll in four polling stations across two District Council Constituencies in East Jaintia Hills following incidents of vandalism during the MDC elections. Reports from the Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills, confirmed that unidentified miscreants stormed polling stations and damaged Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), disrupting the electoral process.

The affected polling stations include Wapung Skur A (Male) and Wapung Skur B (Female) under the 22-Musniang Rangad Constituency, as well as Bataw A (Male) and Bataw B (Female) under the 29-Bataw Lakadong Constituency. Following these disruptions, the Governor of Meghalaya, under Rule 143B (1) of the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous District (Constitution of District Councils) Rules, 1951, has declared a re-poll in these four polling stations.

The re-poll is scheduled to take place on February 22, 2025, from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Authorities are currently investigating the individuals responsible for the vandalism, and security measures are expected to be strengthened to ensure a smooth voting process.
