Shillong – North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum has criticized the state government for what he described as the baseless, years-long closure of the road passing through Them Iewmawlong, where the Harijan Colony is located. He questioned why the road remained closed for six years despite no significant incidents warranting such action, even with police presence in the area.
Expressing satisfaction over the recent reopening of the road, Nongrum empathized with the public who had been affected by the prolonged closure. He urged the government to avoid terms like “Harijan Colony,” “Punjabi Lane,” or “Sweeper Lane,” suggesting instead the use of “Them Iewmawlong” for clarity and respect to the area’s identity.
Nongrum also commented on the Gurudwara at the site, stating it should serve only as a place of worship, not for residential purposes. He extended his sympathies to those inconvenienced by the road’s closure over the years.
