NPP welcomes the Women’s Reservation Bill

Shillong: The ruling National People’s Party (NPP) welcomed the decision of the Central government ỉn introducing the Women’s Reservation Bill that seeks to provide 33 per cent quota for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, CM and NPP chief Conrad K Sangma said that as Meghalaya is the only state in the country that follows Matrilineal custom it welcomes the decision of the central government.

On the second day (September 19) of the special session of the Parliament, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-eight Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha This bill seeks to reserve 33 percent of seats in the Lok Sabha, the state legislatures, and the Delhi legislative assembly for women.

According to the Bill, women reservations will take effect after the delimitation exercise following the first census after the Bill becomes a law. Women’s reservations will come into the end after 15 years from the date of their commencement.
