Shillong: The prominent political leaders from across the Northeast have come together to announce the formation of a common political platform titled ‘One North East’, aimed at giving the region a stronger, more unified voice in national politics.
The announcement was made in New Delhi through a joint statement on Tuesday signed by Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) President Conrad K. Sangma, TIPRA Motha Party founder Pradyot Bikram Manikya, former Nagaland minister and BJP national spokesperson Mmhonlumo Kikon and People’s Party Assam founder Daniel Langthasa.
The leaders described the initiative as a “collective and historic announcement”, marking the coming together of “various voices of our region to form a united singular political entity that truly represents the aspirations of our people.”
“For too long, we, the younger generation leaders of the North East, have spoken about the same issues and concerns of our people, but from different platforms and political spaces,” the statement read. “We have realised that our strength lies in unity and that it is time to give our people one collective voice.”
Taking inspiration from past leaders who fought for the identity and development of the region, the signatories said the new alliance seeks to carry forward that legacy through a shared vision for the future of the Northeast.
To move the initiative forward, the leaders announced plans to constitute a committee that will deliberate on the modalities, structure, and future course of action for the proposed political entity.
“Our united effort is guided by a simple conviction that the people of the North East deserve to be heard, respected, and represented through a strong, unified, and indigenous political voice at the national level,” the statement affirmed.
