New Assembly building completion pushed to Autumn 2025

The completion of Meghalaya’s new Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang, New Shillong, has been extended to the autumn session of 2025.

This decision was finalized during a High Power Committee (HPC) meeting chaired by Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma on Wednesday.

The primary reason for the delay is the intricate and challenging design of the building’s dome, which requires meticulous execution to ensure safety and durability.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Speaker Sangma said the need for caution in the project’s execution. “The progress so far is satisfactory, but we are proceeding very slowly and carefully because of the unique structural design of the main hall dome. There is no similar design in this region. We cannot afford to rush and risk another mishap,” he stated.

He added that a structural engineer has been stationed on-site to ensure quality control. While the initial plan aimed for completion in time for the 2025 budget session, the timeline has now shifted. “We aim to complete the project and inaugurate the building before the autumn session of 2025,” Sangma said
