MRTF Advises Against Implementing Sikkim’s Tourism Model in Meghalaya

HEADLINES

The Meghalaya Rural Tourism Forum (MRTF) has suggested to State Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh that Meghalaya should not adopt Sikkim’s tourism model, particularly in relation to tourist vehicles. In a letter submitted to the minister, MRTF President Alan West Kharkongor argued that the move by the All Meghalaya Khasi Tourist Taxis Association (AMKTTA) to prevent Assam vehicles from transporting tourists to Meghalaya’s tourist destinations is unconstitutional. He noted that the Indian Constitution guarantees free movement of citizens across state borders.

Kharkongor explained that the situation in Sikkim is different due to its proximity to international borders and its unique mountainous geography, making it unfeasible for Meghalaya to implement similar policies. He also added that MRTF will engage in discussions with the government and transport associations to address ongoing concerns in a constructive manner.
