Shillong: Shri Mayralborn Syiem, the UDP MLA from Nongpoh, has called for the implementation of stronger guidelines to bolster tourism in Meghalaya, highlighting the state’s potential as a key destination with numerous sacred and scenic spots. Speaking during a short duration discussion in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Syiem stressed the importance of not only promoting tourism but also ensuring that tourist sites are well-maintained and that those working in the sector are adequately trained.
Syiem expressed concerns about the current state of tourism infrastructure, pointing out the need for proper waste management protocols and the establishment of standards for those employed in various tourism-related roles. He argued that enhancing these aspects would not only improve the visitor experience but also create more job opportunities for residents, especially in a time of growing unemployment.
Moreover, Syiem brought attention to the recent grievances expressed by local tourist drivers, urging the government to address their concerns. He suggested that the government find ways to assist these drivers, who play a crucial role in the tourism industry, and ensure their issues are resolved to create a more conducive environment for tourism growth.
The MLA called for a collaborative approach, involving all stakeholders, to advance the state’s tourism sector and maximize its potential to contribute to the economy and employment.
