Shillong: North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum has stated that the move of the government to force people to enrol for Aadhaar amounts to oppression of the poor and marginalised.
Speaking at a gathering organised by the Awaken India Movement (AIM) in front of the Woh Kiang Nangbah statue near Civil Hospital, Shillong, Adelbert revealed that he himself has not enrolled for Aadhaar. He said he joined the gathering to show support for the demand that Aadhaar should not be made mandatory.
He also recalled that it was at the same venue where he had once staged a hunger strike during his time as an MDC, demanding approval of the Village Administration Bill (VAB) by the government and the Governor.
Adelbert urged AIM leaders not to stop with protests but to also meet with MLAs and MPs to pressurize the government to refrain from making Aadhaar mandatory. He clarified that he is not against Aadhaar itself, but against making it compulsory for people. He added that the Government of India cannot impose Aadhaar as a condition for being a citizen or availing rights in the country.
