Meghalaya reduces power losses, bringing down to 16% from 35%

Meghalaya has successfully reduced its Aggregated Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses, bringing them down to 16%, a significant improvement from the 35% recorded just a few years ago.

Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal, while sharing the update on Friday, highlighted the progress. “From 2023 onwards, we have managed to lower AT&C losses to below 18%, and currently, it stands at 16%,” he stated.

This achievement has earned the state national recognition in energy efficiency for two consecutive years. Meghalaya secured second place in an award given to only eight eligible states. Expressing his ambition to go further, Mondal has instructed his team to strive for the top position next time.

He credited the reduction in losses to a systematic approach, including intensified reviews at the sub-divisional level to identify high-loss areas. Additionally, the government plans to install separate meters on transformers to track electricity theft and leakages, ensuring better accountability.
