MDCs raise concern over KHADC’s lack of map since 1952

HEADLINES

Mawshynrut MDC Srally Rashir of the HSPDP has raised questions over the absence of an official map for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) since 1952 and whether having one is necessary.

In response, KHADC’s Executive Member in charge of Land and Revenue, Powel Sohkhlet, stated that while the council does not have a formal map, its boundaries are defined based on the traditional Raids, Elakas, and Himas.

However, Rashir emphasized the importance of having a clearly defined map, citing recent disputes in Malangkona that have led to unrest.

Echoing similar concerns, Rambrai MDC Lurshai Kharbani highlighted the challenges posed by KHADC’s lack of defined boundaries, especially when compared to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), which has boundary pillars marking its jurisdiction, including in areas under his Rambrai constituency.

Kharbani further alleged that in certain Khasi villages under Rongjeng Block, which falls under GHADC, Garo residents have altered the original Khasi village names into Garo names, raising further concerns over territorial identity and administration.
