Lapangap and Tapat Villages Sign Five-Point Peace Agreement to Restore Harmony at Border

HEADLINES

Shillong, Oct 22: In a major step towards restoring peace along the Meghalaya–Assam border, the villages of Lapangap (Meghalaya) and Tapat (Assam) have signed a five-point agreement to end tensions and ensure smooth paddy harvesting this season. The agreement was signed on October 22, 2025, in the presence of officials from both states.

The first condition emphasizes the immediate arrest of those involved in the death of Oriwel Timung of Tapat, Assam, and speedy completion of the investigation. Both sides agreed that if the accused are not apprehended, there can be no lasting peace during the harvest season.

The second clause states that residents of both villages must refrain from border disputes and allow the respective state authorities to handle all territorial matters.

Third, villagers from both sides must inform their local authorities before carrying out agricultural or forest-related activities such as farming, planting, or livestock grazing to avoid misunderstandings.

Fourth, the agreement permits harvesting activities to resume peacefully from October 22, 2025, under mutual cooperation.

Finally, both villages agreed to maintain regular dialogue and mutual understanding to preserve peace and prevent future conflicts.

The agreement was signed by Deimonmi Lyngdoh, Headman of Lapangap, and Olingson Timung, Headman of Tapat, in the presence of government officials from West Jaintia Hills and West Karbi Anglong, including the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, and Magistrates from both sides.
