Shillong, Sept 24: A major landslide occurred near Pomlum village along the Shillong–Pynursla–Dawki road on Wednesday, bringing traffic to a standstill for several hours.
The landslip was triggered by blasting work carried out by a company engaged in the ongoing two-lane road construction. Large boulders and debris fell onto the road, blocking the vital route used by commuters and tourist vehicles.
Authorities and company workers rushed to the site to clear the debris and restore traffic flow. The Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Pynursla has already enforced regulated timings for vehicles to ply on this stretch owing to the ongoing construction work.
The incident once again highlights the recurring risks faced by commuters along this strategic road that connects Shillong to Dawki, a major gateway for trade and tourism.
