In observance of Anti-Uranium Day and marking the 4th death anniversary of Meiieid Spility Lyngdoh Langrin, members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) South West Khasi Hills District took to the streets of Mawkyrwat this morning, 28 October 2024. They displayed posters and banners in the market area as a tribute to the unwavering resistance Meiieid Spility displayed throughout her life, right until her passing.
Meiieid Spility Lyngdoh Langrin was a key figure in the fight against uranium mining from the 1980s through the 1990s, 2002, 2007, and beyond. When the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) offered her vast sums of money to lease land, she firmly rejected the offer, declaring, “Money cannot buy my freedom.” In 1990, when the government issued a Pre-Military Order to acquire the land, she sent a letter to the Prime Minister of India, stating, “It is better to be beheaded than to lose even an inch of land.”
Later today, KSU members will also lay flowers at her grave in Domiasiat village to honor her legacy and contributions to the community’s fight against uranium mining.
