The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has decided to write to the state government, urging it to formally recognize and value the role of village heads (Rangbah Shnong) at all times, not just during crises like COVID-19 or law and order issues.
This decision was made during a meeting with Rangbah Shnong from Shillong and representatives from the Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong ka Bri Hynñiewtrep (SNSBH), chaired by KHADC’s Deputy Chief Executive Member, Pynshngaiñ N Syiem.
Syiem highlighted that some village heads have reported being disregarded by police and magistrates when attempting to address local matters. He stressed the need for clear written acknowledgment from the government to ensure Rangbah Shnong are respected and their role upheld in all situations, not just during times of crisis.
He pointed out that during the COVID-19 pandemic, village heads played a crucial role in supporting the government, but once the crisis subsided, their contributions were no longer recognized.
