The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has called on the residents of Meghalaya to join a public rally on November 8, 2024, heading to the Secretariat to press the state government to implement seven key measures to combat the rising drug trade and addiction, especially in Shillong.
The seven demands submitted to the Chief Minister include the establishment of rehabilitation centers, free detoxification (OST) and day care centers in high-risk areas, the creation of fast track courts under the NDPS Act, stronger investigation and prosecution of drug-related cases, control of drug trafficking under the PITNDPS Act, and the establishment of a Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) office in Shillong.
HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem stated that while the state government had announced the Drug Reduction Elimination and Action Mission (DREAM) in 2023, there has been little visible implementation of the plan.
