The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has raised concerns about the potential influx of Bangladeshi immigrants into Meghalaya following the Supreme Court’s ruling that upheld Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, 1955, as part of the Assam Accord. The Council fears this ruling could lead to undocumented immigrants from Assam entering Meghalaya.
HYC President Roykupar Synrem stated that, based on the Supreme Court’s judgment, individuals who entered India before 1971 must be detained and deported. He warned that those in Assam fearing deportation might seek refuge in Meghalaya.
In response, the HYC has called on the state government to pressure the Indian government to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya and enforce the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Synrem also highlighted the need to enforce the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) Amendment, 2020, as the current 2016 law is insufficient to protect the state.
