Shillong: Meghalaya’s Tourism Minister and Government Spokesperson, Paul Lyngdoh, has raised concerns over the actions of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) in detaining alleged drug peddlers and users. During a press briefing, Lyngdoh emphasized that while the President of HYC is a lawyer familiar with the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, it is crucial to question whether the law permits such detentions by non-authorized groups.
Lyngdoh further stated that acts outside the bounds of the law, such as detaining individuals without proper legal authority, are unsustainable and will not stand up in court. He added that legal measures must be followed, and any actions against the law would eventually lead to failure in the judicial system.
This comes after the HYC leadership recently faced a police case at Rynjah Police Station for allegedly manhandling suspected drug peddlers and users. Paul Lyngdoh warned that any extrajudicial actions, though intended to address social issues, would only be temporary solutions and could result in legal consequences.
