The President of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) Roy Kupar Synrem, expressed uncertainty to what extent the Expert Committee will considered the suggestions put forth, adding a sense of doubt about the future of the ongoing discussions of the Reservation Policy.
When asked if the ongoing discussions would lead to a resolution, Synrem stated that it is uncertain at this time. He added that the leaders of various political parties (particularly those in power) have suggested that it should remain in Status Quo, indicating that there will be no immediate changes to the current reservation policy. Meanwhile, the HYC president said if it remain as it is, the HYC will take another steps.
The government-appointed expert committee recently conducted a public hearing in Shillong on Thursday to gather opinions on potential changes to the reservation policy.
A key point raised by Synrem and the HYC is the Reservation Policy needs to separate ‘employment’ and ‘education quotas’. Synrem also highlighted population dynamics as a basis for redistribution, suggesting that the Khasi-Jaintia group, which represents 46 percent of the population as of 2022, should have a larger share. He argued that the Khasi-Jaintia’s reservation should increase to 50 percent, while the Garo’s, representing around 32 percent, should stand at 40 percent.
