Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has expressed deep concern over the recent incident involving the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), which shut down the Administrative Block of NEIGRIHMS, including the office of the Director.

Speaking on the matter today, Conrad said that even during times of war, armies refrain from targeting hospitals and what happened at NEIGRIHMS is unfortunate, as the ones who ultimately suffer are the public and the patients. He stressed that such actions are unacceptable, even in the face of grievances. “The right approach is to engage in dialogue and discussions to resolve issues—not through force,” he stated.

He further added that disrupting the operations and functioning of a hospital is not the correct course of action. Police have already registered a case in connection with the incident, he informed.

The HYC had recently shut down the office of the NEIGRIHMS Director after the deadline set by the organization expired without a response. the members of HYC attempted to forcibly enter the Director’s office leading to a confrontation with the security personnel. They asked Prof Mehta to come out of his office and hold discussions with them outside. As he came out, they shut the Director’s Administrative Block. Synrem told the Director they would not leave the campus until they receive a written response on their demands.

The group had demanded the recruitment of local candidates as nurses and proposed an 80:20 gender ratio, 80 percent women and 20 percent men in the recruitment process.
