CCTV Malfunctions During Alleged Police Assault on HYC Leaders in Pynursla, Says SDPO Report

HEADLINES

The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has rejected the report submitted by the Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Pynursla, which claimed that the CCTV at the Pynursla Police Station was not functioning during the time of an alleged assault. The incident involved HYC members and 2nd Officer In-charge George Dkhar, who is accused of assaulting HYC Riwar President Lamphrang Khonglam.

HYC President Roykupar Synrem stated that on February 24, 2024, HYC members attempted to hand over two vehicles suspected of cattle smuggling to the police. However, upon reaching the Pynursla Police Station, the 2nd In-charge allegedly assaulted the HYC leader, seized members’ mobile phones, and detained them until midnight.

The SDPO’s report, submitted following an inquiry, claimed the CCTV was not operational and accused the HYC members of causing disturbance at the station. HYC has dismissed the report and announced plans to pursue legal action against George Dkhar, accusing him of misconduct.

The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) will review the case on November 14, 2024.
