Shillong: The Meghalaya unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced that it is preparing to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha by-election and is hopeful of fielding its own candidate this time.
Speaking to the media, BJP Meghalaya spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang said that the party had also geared up to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha election. However, due to instructions to support a candidate from its ally in the government, the party did not get the opportunity to field its own nominee.
Responding to a query, Kharkrang stated that the state unit remains bound by directives from the party’s central leadership in Delhi on whether to field a candidate or extend support to another contender. He added that, as of now, the party has capable and suitable candidates ready to contest the forthcoming election.
The statement signals a renewed push by the BJP’s Meghalaya unit to assert a more direct presence in the parliamentary contest, subject to the final decision from the central leadership.
