Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday made a suo motu statement in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, informing the House that police have arrested another person allegedly involved in the violence during the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) rally on August 19.
Sangma said three senior KSU leaders including the president, vice-president and general secretary had earlier been arrested in connection with the incident, while one more person allegedly involved in the violence has now been taken into custody.
He informed the Assembly that 15 FIRs have been registered so far in connection with the incident.
The Chief Minister also said that following the unrest, the state government had initiated steps to resolve the ongoing dispute affecting commercial vehicles operating between Meghalaya and Assam.
He referred to the meeting between Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar and Assam Minister Atul Bora, held to address the issue arising from the agitation involving commercial vehicles from both states.
Sangma said another meeting was held on Sunday between the Deputy Chief Minister and representatives of transport organisations in Meghalaya, where it was decided that efforts would be made to resolve the matter at the earliest.
The Chief Minister assured the Assembly that the government would not allow anyone to create further disorder and that those involved in the violence would not be allowed to evade the law.
