Five people, including 3 Khasi and 2 Nepali workers, lost their lives in a tragic incident at Lapalang, Shillong, on Friday morning after they were overcome by suspected toxic gas inside a well.
According to preliminary information, the workers had nearly completed the construction of the well and were carrying out the final stages of the work. Reports indicate that they lowered a water pump into the well to remove accumulated water, unaware that toxic gas had built up inside.
The workers who entered the well reportedly became unconscious after inhaling the suspected poisonous gas and were unable to escape. One worker survived after leaving the site to call for help, while another person who attempted to rescue those trapped inside also lost his life.
The incident occurred at Lane 4, Lapalang.
Personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services Search and Rescue Team recovered the bodies from the well.
The exact cause of the incident is yet to be officially confirmed, and authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
