The allegations circulating on social media accusing Jonathan of sexually exploiting and violating the dignity of several young women have caused widespread concern, particularly among members of the Mizo community residing in Shillong.
Speaking to the media, Young Mizo Association President Ricky Rynthlei said he had spoken with Jonathan’s father over the phone. According to Ricky, Jonathan’s family was unaware of the allegations until they surfaced online. Jonathan’s father reportedly stated that if the allegations are proven to be true, his son should face punishment in accordance with the law.
Ricky further clarified that Jonathan has not absconded. He explained that educational institutions are currently on vacation, during which many students return to their hometowns. Jonathan had also informed them that he had travelled home and had reached Guwahati when news of the allegations began circulating.
It was also revealed that Jonathan’s father serves as a pastor.
Meanwhile, Young Mizo Association Secretary J. Lalsngnliana said the association has yet to ascertain the authenticity of the allegations, as the information has so far emerged only through social media. He appealed to any alleged victims, if the accusations are genuine, to come forward and lodge a formal First Information Report (FIR). He assured that the association would extend its full support and assistance to anyone seeking help.
Ricky noted that this is the first time the association has encountered such an allegation involving a member of the community. He also urged the public not to turn the matter into an ethnic issue or allow it to disturb communal harmony.
According to claims circulating on social media, Jonathan has been accused of sexually assaulting several young women. Police have initiated an investigation into the allegations.
