HC rejects State plea to cancel Sonam Raghuvanshi bail

HEADLINES

The Meghalaya High Court on Monday rejected the State government’s petition seeking cancellation of the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi by the District and Sessions Court, Shillong.

During the hearing, Justice W. Diengdoh dismissed the State’s plea to revoke the bail granted to Sonam, who is currently facing charges in connection with the alleged murder of her husband during their honeymoon in Sohra earlier this year.

The State government, through its counsel, had invoked Section 482 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), urging the High Court to exercise its inherent powers to set aside the bail order issued by the lower court.

Counsel for Sonam, Sudev Thapa, confirmed that the High Court had declined the State’s request to cancel the bail. He added that a copy of the court’s order is expected to be made available later in the day.

Sonam Raghuvanshi was granted bail by the District and Sessions Court, Shillong, earlier this year on the ground that the investigating agency had failed to inform her of the reasons for her arrest, as mandated under Article 22 of the Constitution of India.

However, despite being granted bail in that case, she continues to remain in custody in connection with the separate murder case.
