The by-election to the Shillong Lok Sabha constituency is likely to be held by October this year, according to Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Dr. BDR Tiwari.
Responding to queries on the matter, Dr. Tiwari said the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is expected to continue until October and is currently progressing smoothly.
While the CEO stopped short of explicitly confirming whether the by-election would be held before August, he indicated that the SIR exercise would continue through October, making it likely that the parliamentary by-election could also be conducted around the same period.
Under electoral rules, the by-election for the Shillong Parliamentary seat was required to be held within six months of the demise of former MP Ricky AJ Syngkon in February this year, which would have meant a poll by August. However, the Election Commission of India may extend the timeline to October as the SIR exercise is being carried out in Meghalaya along with several other states across the country.
