A regional camp aimed at strengthening food security awareness and implementation was held on May 15 at Rongjeng in East Garo Hills district, jointly organised by the Rongjeng Sub-Division Office (Civil) and the Meghalaya State Food Commission.
The programme was attended by D. P. Wahlang, IAS(Retd.) and Chairman of the Meghalaya State Food Commission, as the Chief Guest, along with Dr. M. Tyngkan,Member of the Commission, Deputy Commissioner, East Garo Hills District, Senior Officers and Shri. I. W. Ingty, IAS(Retd.), Member Secretary.
Addressing the gathering, Wahlang highlighted the importance of the Food Security Act in achieving the goal of zero hunger and ensuring that no individual in Meghalaya suffers from starvation. He explained that the Commission oversees the implementation of various food security schemes managed by departments including Food & Civil Supplies, Education, and Social Welfare. These include the Public Distribution System (PDS), PM POSHAN scheme, and services provided through Anganwadi Centres.
Wahlang also urged beneficiaries to approach the Meghalaya State Food Commission if grievances related to food security schemes remain unresolved at lower levels, assuring that the Commission would intervene to protect the rights of eligible beneficiaries.
Officials from different departments delivered presentations on Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), PM POSHAN, and the Public Distribution System, while stressing the role of the Food Security Act as a sustainable initiative towards achieving zero hunger.
