Shillong, May 14: Meghalaya Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Thursday inaugurated the newly renovated SPS Tynrai Football Arena at Shillong Public School, Laitumkhrah, in collaboration with Tynrai Academy.
Addressing students and officials, Rymbui stressed the importance of balancing academics with sports, saying athletics help shape a student’s discipline, personality, and overall development. He urged students to stay focused on their goals and work hard to achieve success.
The minister described Shillong Public School as one of the city’s most sought-after institutions due to its quality faculty and educational environment. He also highlighted the historical significance of the school building, noting that it once served as the office of the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills and had been associated with several IAS officers.
Encouraging students to dream big, Rymbui said Meghalaya has the potential to produce Olympians and international athletes, drawing inspiration from neighbouring Manipur. Referring to athlete Matsiewdor War, who represented India at the Asian Games, he encouraged students to identify and develop their talents.
He also informed that the Meghalaya government provides assured government jobs for medal winners at national and international sporting events, including the Olympics, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games.
Director of School Education & Literacy Banteilang Kharshandi said a Memorandum of Understanding between the Education and Sports Departments was signed in February, and the arena project was completed within three months. He expressed hope that similar sports infrastructure projects would expand across Meghalaya.
The event concluded with a friendly football match between officials of the Directorate of School Education & Literacy and students of Shillong Public School, promoting sportsmanship and community participation.
