HEADLINES

Ahmedabad: India national cricket team created history by becoming the first team to win a T20 World Cup on home soil, defeating New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.

Led by Suryakumar Yadav, India clinched a record third T20 World Cup title in front of a packed crowd at the world’s largest cricket stadium.

Batting first after New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner opted to field, India posted a massive 255/5 in 20 overs, the highest total ever in a T20 World Cup final.

Sanju Samson led the charge with a blistering 89 off 46 balls, while Abhishek Sharma smashed 52 off 21 balls and Ishan Kishan added 54 off 25 balls to power the hosts to a daunting total.

New Zealand’s chase never gathered momentum as India’s bowling attack dominated. Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah delivered a match-winning spell of 4/15, earning the Player of the Final award.

Vice-captain Axar Patel also played a key role with 3/27, as New Zealand were bowled out for 159 runs.

Samson, who had an outstanding tournament, was named Player of the Tournament.

The victory erased memories of India’s heartbreak at the same venue during the 2023 ODI World Cup final, when the team lost despite an unbeaten run throughout the tournament.

With the win, India successfully defended their T20 World Cup title and further cemented their dominance in the shortest format of the game.
