Speaker sets Record straight after Ardent uses ‘Khasi’ while omitting ‘Jaiñtia’ in Reservation debate

Shillong: VPP leader Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit was pulled up in the Assembly on Friday after he referred only to the term “Khasi” during the debate on the Expert Committee’s report on the State Reservation Policy, prompting Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar to raise a point of order over the omission of “Jaiñtia.”

Raising the issue in the House, Dhar pointed out that the reservation policy clearly specifies “Khasi and Jaiñtia” and stressed that the official classification must be used in Assembly proceedings.

“I am raising the point of order on the speech made by the elected member from Nongkrem. The member referred to the term ‘Khasi’ and not inclusive of Jaiñtia. As we all know, as per the reservation policy, it is specifically reserved for Khasi and Jaiñtia,” Dhar said, urging the Speaker to ensure the correct terminology is placed on record.

Despite the objection, Basaiawmoit defended his remarks and maintained that he intentionally used the term “Khasi,” claiming it was meant to unify the sub-tribes and that there was no ill intention behind his statement. He also expressed surprise that a minister chose to raise the matter in the House.

Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla, supporting Dhar’s position, pointed out that the 1972 notification clearly mentions “Khasi and Jaiñtia,” stressing the need to maintain accuracy in official records.

Speaker Thomas A. Sangma later ruled that the official record must retain the term “Khasi and Jaiñtia,” effectively correcting Basaiawmoit’s reference.
