Shillong: Deputy Chief Minister and Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar has stated that the relocation of street vendors in Shillong is taking time because the government must thoroughly assess whether the proposed sites will actually allow vendors to earn their daily livelihood.
He explained that several challenges have slowed the process. In some cases, the location is suitable but the local community does not permit it. In other cases, the locality agrees, but the vendors reject the site, saying they will not be able to earn enough to sustain themselves. These conflicting concerns, he said, have made the process difficult and slow.
Speaking about the recently allotted vending space at Khyndailad, Dhar said the site is adequate and functional. “It may not match everyone’s expectations, but the market there is viable,” he added.
