AKMTTA Says Tourists Prefer Local Drivers but Law Restricts Them

HEADLINES

Shillong: Leaders of the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA) on Tuesday claimed that tourists are happier when guided by local drivers to scenic spots, but alleged that legal restrictions prevent this.

AKMTTA president Regaldinus Dohling, spokesperson Balajied, and other leaders clarified that their protest was not against tourists but against drivers from outside the state earning within Meghalaya. They said out-of-state vehicles may drop tourists at hotels, but local drivers should be the ones ferrying them to tourist destinations.

Regaldinus added that many drivers are struggling to repay loans, forcing them to hit the streets to voice their grievances. During the protest, AKMTTA members blocked tourist taxis and distributed pamphlets to drivers and visitors, outlining their demands. While Tuesday’s action stopped at pamphlet distribution and warnings, the association hinted at stronger measures in the future if their concerns remain unaddressed.
