HEADLINES

Shillong: Meghalaya Police have arrested 21 suspects in connection with a string of two-wheeler thefts across the state over the past two days, including 10 Bangladeshi nationals.

The crackdown began after reports of rampant bike thefts in Shillong. At a roadblock in Mawryngkneng on Thursday, police intercepted and arrested Nehlang Lamare (24) of Barato, followed by Klement Timung (18) of Jowai. Three more – Peter Pohrmen (18), Vicky Dkhar (20), and Romeo Ryngksai (24) – were later caught for allegedly handing over stolen bikes to Bangladeshi receivers.

Based on disclosures, a joint operation by East Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills police on the night of Sept 4–5 led to the arrest of 14 more suspects, including Bangladeshi nationals Kawsar Mia, Ali Hussain, Md Rafiq Miah, Md Jil Miah, Monnan Miah, Rumel Miah, Shabaj Miah, Ridial Hussain, Samiya Mia, and a minor, along with four from Barato.

Separately, in a case linked to a scooty theft from Mawlai Nongkohlew, police recovered the stolen vehicle and arrested Stevenson Mawlein and Richesstar Kharumnuid from Mawlai Mawsiatkhnam.

Police said investigations are ongoing and more arrests may follow as the racket’s network is uncovered.
