NEHU disrupted as employees strike over delayed recruitment process

HEADLINES

North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) was disrupted on Monday due to an indefinite strike by its employees protesting the delay in recruitment for vacancies announced since November 23, 2023.

The NEHU offices were completely empty due to the strike, except for a few contract workers. No buses used to transport students were operating due to the protest. The indefinite strike also impacted classes, leaving classrooms empty.

At a meeting held on the 29th of October this year , NEHUNSA stated that it had already sent several letters to the Vice-Chancellor urging the appointment process to be expedited, but no action had been taken.

Speaking to the media, NEHUNSA President WR Synrem said that the Vice-Chancellor has called for a meeting with them on Tuesday at 4 p.m. He added that the strike could continue if the discussions do not yield any results and urged the Vice-Chancellor to expedite the completion of the recruitment process.

According to WR Synrem, the National Testing Agency (NTA) should conduct the recruitment examination, but it has informed NEHU that it cannot conduct the test. The President of NEHUNSA noted that NEHU had issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) to conduct the test, with the deadline set for 30th November. However, one month later, no committee has been assigned to manage the recruitment process.
