MDC terms to expire even if elections are postponed due to amendment: PN Syiem

HEADLINES

KHADC Deputy CEM, Pynshngaiñ N Syiem, said according to his understanding if the amendment is introduced in December, elections could be delayed by a few months, but the terms of the MDCs would still expire. He said that under the Sixth Schedule, the term of office cannot be extend beyond one year if already been extended.

Syiem pointed out that the elections should have been held by last week of February next year. In the event of further delays due to the amendment, the State Government, in consultation with the Governor, may appoint an Administrator to take charge of the Council, and the term of all current MDCs would end.

He further clarified that the urgency to introduce the Sixth Schedule amendment is not being driven by the KHADC, but rather by a collective effort of the other 10 Autonomous Councils across the North East. He added that the ADCs that the BJP are in the ruling are keen on accelerating the introduction of the amendment.
