Nongpoh: A tragic road accident claimed the life of a 23-year-old woman after the scooter she was travelling on collided with a truck at Sumer in Ri-Bhoi district on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Retina Hanse (23), a resident of Khamar village in Ri-Bhoi. She was riding pillion on a scooter bearing registration number ML-05-AC-2751, which was being driven by Celestial Hanse (27), also from the same village.
According to police sources, the scooter and the truck bearing registration number JK-02BS-0445 were travelling in the same direction from Sumer towards Nongpoh when the accident occurred near the Western By-Pass Road construction site at Sumer.
In the collision, the scooter rider Celestial Hanse sustained minor injuries, while Retina Hanse suffered severe injuries and later succumbed.
Following the incident, the truck driver was taken to Umsning Community Health Centre (CHC) for medical examination.
Police officials said that the exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined, and an investigation has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances leading to the crash.
