Youth Parliament 2026 Begins in Tura; Speaker Thomas A. Sangma Urges Youth to Shape Governance

Tura, March 2, 2026: The two-day Youth Parliament 2026 began successfully at the District Auditorium, Tura. The programme is organised by the Department of Political Science, Tura Christian College, and sponsored by the Office of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

The inaugural session was graced by Thomas A. Sangma, Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and MLA from 50-North Tura (ST), as Chief Guest.

Addressing the gathering, the Speaker expressed satisfaction at witnessing the first Youth Parliament in Tura and commended the college and organisers for nurturing democratic values among young minds. He emphasised that the initiative reflects the Assembly’s commitment to encouraging youth participation and strengthening awareness of democratic processes.

Referring to the theme, “The Voice of Youth: Shaping the Future of Governance,” Sangma highlighted that democracy depends on informed and responsible citizens. He said platforms like Youth Parliament give students practical exposure to legislative functioning, where ideas are debated and decisions are reached through dialogue.

Quoting 1 Timothy 4:12, he urged participants to lead by example, stressing that integrity and character form the foundation of true leadership.

Former Commissioner & Secretary and Adviser (Legislation), Dr. Andrew Simons, also addressed the students, praising their discipline and research skills. He described Youth Parliament as a training ground for responsible citizenship and parliamentary decorum.

The valedictory session on March 3 will be attended by Wanweiroy Kharlukhi, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), as Chief Guest, with Shri Malthus S. Sangma, MCS, Secretary, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, as Guest of Honour.
