Shillong: To ensure the community is better equipped in the event of a sudden earthquake, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), in collaboration with the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills, organised an extensive awareness programme today as part of National Disaster Reduction Day 2025.
The programme aimed to educate the public on vital techniques to protect themselves during earthquakes and other emergencies. Demonstrations on first response, evacuation procedures, and community-level preparedness were conducted to ensure people know exactly what to do when disaster strikes.
The awareness drive was carried out at two key locations in Shillong — Don Bosco Square and 9 Lad — drawing the participation of students from Martin Luther Christian University, along with volunteers and officials from disaster response units.
Trainers emphasised the importance of awareness at the household and village level, explaining that preparedness is the strongest tool in reducing casualties and damage during natural disasters.
The DDMA said such initiatives will continue, encouraging residents to take disaster-preparedness seriously and remain alert to safeguard lives in times of crisis.
