Wanted Manipur militant arrested by Meghalaya Police in Byrnihat

HEADLINES

Shillong : In a significant counter-insurgency breakthrough, Meghalaya Police have arrested a top leader of a banned Manipur-based militant outfit from a rented house in Nongthymmai, Byrnihat, Ri-Bhoi district.

The arrested individual has been identified as Khundongbam Herojit Meitei, the Finance Secretary of the Kangleipak Communist Party – People’s War Group (KCP-PWG), a proscribed terrorist organization active in Manipur and neighboring states. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a special team from Ri-Bhoi Police launched a targeted operation and apprehended Meitei on Monday.

Two mobile phones and other incriminating materials were recovered from his possession. During interrogation, Meitei admitted to being an active member of KCP-PWG and confessed to collecting funds on behalf of the outfit. Preliminary findings suggest he had been hiding along the Assam–Meghalaya border to evade intensified crackdowns on militant groups in Manipur.

Authorities suspect Meitei also has links with militant networks operating out of Myanmar and Nepal. He has a history of criminal involvement, having been arrested in Manipur in 2023 for possession of illegal firearms and in Dimapur in 2018 in connection with a drug trafficking case.

A case has been registered at the Nongpoh Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
