Baksa, Oct 15: Tension gripped Assam’s Mussalpur area on Wednesday as police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse an agitated mob that attacked vehicles carrying the five accused in cultural icon Zubeen Garg’s death case to Baksa Central Jail.
According to police, the convoy came under heavy stone-pelting as it approached the jail premises. The violent mob smashed the vehicles’ glass panes, injuring several people, including a policewoman and journalists covering the protest.
As the situation turned volatile, protesters demanded that the accused be “handed over to the public to ensure justice for Zubeen.” The mob attempted to breach the security cordon at the prison gates, forcing police to use batons to push them back.
Despite repeated appeals for calm, the crowd continued advancing until police took firm action to control the chaos. While the convoy successfully entered the jail compound, tension continued to prevail in the area late into the evening.
Senior police officers have since been deployed, and security has been heightened around Baksa Jail to prevent further unrest.
Earlier in the day, NEIF chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Zubeen’s manager Siddhartha Sharma, his cousin and police officer Sandipan Garg, and PSOs Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya were remanded to judicial custody by the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate after their police remand ended.
The court, citing security concerns, directed that they be sent to a facility with fewer inmates. Authorities subsequently chose Baksa Jail, which was inaugurated two months ago and remains largely unoccupied.
Assam’s beloved cultural icon Zubeen Garg died tragically on September 19 while swimming in the sea in Singapore, a loss that continues to spark widespread grief and outrage across the region.
