‘Very High Risk’: NIT Report Flags Multi-Storey Building at Mawkynroh for Immediate Action

HEADLINES

Shillong: A multi-storey building at Mawkynroh, near the Mawlai Bypass, has been identified as being at ‘very high risk’ of collapse, potentially leading to a catastrophic incident if immediate action is not taken. The building, came under scrutiny following a landslide in May caused by Cyclone Remal, revealing structural vulnerabilities and its precarious location.

The State Disaster Management Authority tasked NIT Shillong with conducting a detailed investigation into the building’s safety and the surrounding area. The NIT report confirmed the building is in a state of “very high risk,” recommending immediate intervention by the authorities. It also noted that nearby areas are susceptible to landslides, urging residents and landowners to take precautionary measures.

The report further highlighted that the Mawlai Bypass Road is also at risk of landslides, lacking adequate protective measures to prevent potential earth movements.

Upon receiving the report, the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner’s office, in August this year, instructed the Block Development Office (BDO) to take necessary action and issue warnings to residents living near the building. Authorities have ordered the owner to halt all construction work immediately, citing the potential threat to human life.

This urgent situation underscores the need for swift action to prevent a possible disaster and protect the lives and properties of those residing in the vicinity.
