Vendor leader dissatisfied with new designated areas, says Govt trying to pressurise

HEADLINES

Shillong: The Meghalaya & Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association has accused the government of pressuring vendors to relocate from their current selling locations.

In an interview with Biolin Pyrtuh, the leader of the association, she expressed concern that the government is forcing vendors to vacate their current spots and relocate to designated vending areas that are already being prepared. She said that this decision is being imposed without proper consultation or adequate preparation.

Pyrtuh, who is also a member of the Town Vending Committee (TVC), mentioned that the government proposed moving the vendors to a parking lot located across from the SBI Main Branch. However, the association has expressed dissatisfaction with this suggestion, particularly concerning the area proposed by MUDA. The vendors have not yet agreed to this relocation plan and are awaiting further discussions, scheduled for April 25.

While the association clarified that they do not oppose relocation altogether, they are concerned about the suitability of the proposed sites. They have stated that they are open to working with the government to ensure a smooth transition, with the goal of preserving the livelihoods of the vendors while maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of Khyndailad.
