Umling, Ri-Bhoi District — In a tragic road accident that occurred around 3:35 PM on Sunday along NH-06 near Umling Narang, an auto-rickshaw driver was killed after a speeding truck rammed into his vehicle, sending it plunging into a roadside drain.
The truck (AS-01-SC-8025), carrying goods for Flipkart Internet Pvt Ltd, was being driven by Nidajan Niang (35) from West Jaintia Hills and was en route from Guwahati to Shillong. On reaching near the Umling petrol pump, it crashed into an auto-rickshaw (ML-10-D-0206) driven by Sibu Dey (40) of Tanda, Byrnihat.
The impact caused the auto to fall into a drain, while the truck overturned in the middle of the highway. Eyewitnesses reported that the truck was moving at excessive speed and the driver appeared under the influence of alcohol.
Tragically, Sibu Dey died on the spot, while a passenger in the auto, Rofiqul Islam (27) from Dhubri, Assam, sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The truck driver escaped unhurt but was found to be intoxicated, according to initial reports.
