Shillong: A truck driver was detained by local residents and Village Defence Party (VDP) members after dangerously swerving through traffic in Ri-Bhoi on Monday night.
According to Ri-Bhoi Police, the incident occurred around 9:30 pm when a truck travelling from Guwahati towards Shillong, driven by Warilang Dkhar (38) of Nongjngi, Thadlaskein in West Jaintia Hills, rammed into a roadside shop before veering into the opposite lane. Despite the collision, the driver continued moving in the wrong lane, posing a serious risk to oncoming vehicles.
Witnesses, along with VDP members, immediately pursued the truck and managed to stop and detain the driver. Police confirmed that no other vehicles were hit and no injuries were reported, calling the outcome “fortunate,” given the potential for a major accident.
“This kind of reckless behaviour could have been fatal not only for the driver but also for fellow commuters,” Ri-Bhoi Police said, while commending the civilians who intervened despite the risks involved.
Legal action has been initiated against the driver.
