Shillong: The Meghalaya government has formally urged the Union Government to replace the Vice Chancellor of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), citing prolonged unrest on campus and a demand that has remained unresolved for over a year.
Speaking on Wednesday, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said the call for a change in leadership at NEHU has been consistently raised by all stakeholders of the university, not by any single group, and questioned why the Government of India has continued to remain silent despite the seriousness of the situation.
He pointed out that the Vice Chancellor continues to function amid sustained turmoil, a situation that has already led to the resignation of the Pro Vice Chancellor, further deepening the crisis at the central university.
Rymbui said the State Government has written to the concerned Ministry, urging the immediate appointment of a new Vice Chancellor to restore stability and ensure NEHU returns to normal academic and administrative functioning.
